When watching a movie based-on or inspired-by true events, the first thing I always ask myself leaving the theater is “well, how much of that actually happened?” Thankfully, someone already did the research and, even better, they’ve made it into a podcast.
Dan LeFebvre’s “Based on a True Story” podcast covers a variety of film genres and takes a deep dive into each one. I am the type of person that will endlessly search IMDB for film factoids and let me tell you, this podcast is essentially an audio IMDB.
I stumbled upon Dan’s show when I was looking for some additional movie podcasts to listen to. It was perfect timing because I had just finished re-watching David Fincher’s 2007 thriller “Zodiac” and was wondering how closely the film portrayed real life.
Dan jumped into how the film itself performed at the box office (SPOILER: it didn’t do well) and also compared the reality of the events involving the Zodiac killer to the film’s portrayal of the events.
There are three reasons I adore this podcast:
1) It is well-researched!
It is not an easy task to take real live events and compare them to film. There is time involved with watching the films, comparing articles, searching for interviews, sifting through journals. Dan makes this sound so simple. His podcast episodes are very thorough.
2) Dan’s narration is compelling!
I am the type of person that has gut instincts about podcasts. If I’m not hooked within the first 5 minutes, a show has probably lost me as a listener forever. Dan’s show caught me from the start. From the special music in the beginning of each episode to the charismatic voice of the narrator, Based on a True Story has all the elements of a great audio piece.
3) I learn something!
Learning for me is a must with a podcast. Sure, I love a good laugh as much an anyone, but I’m looking to gain at least one new perspective or tidbit from each podcast I listen to. Dan’s show is full of history and lore. He helps me understand parts of film that are put there in historical context and others that are there strictly for entertainment value.
Based on a True Story is a must for movie buffs or lovers of history. Whether you’re a fan of animated classics like “Anastasia”, classic dramas like “A Few Good Men”, or just a lover a history, you will always find something here. Listen to this right before you watch a film or come back afterwards and see what holds up as truth.
You will enjoy it either way.
