Our wallets are about to get Owned.
As the sun sets on yet another year of E3 excitement, we here at the 410wned crew are still reeling. We’ve dried as much of the sweat as we possibly could and rolled up our sleeves to bring you our impressions. Our top five moments!
“Moments?” you ask with a befuddled squint.
Yes, moments. Because when one publisher alone decides to showcase 50 games…well, do you want to read this all day, or get in line to start pre-ordering? We’ve got you covered.
Here are 410wned’s collective top five moments of E3 2018…
Halo: Infinite and 3 Gears of War games
Who knew? Come on, we all knew, but is this what we really saw coming? Microsoft showed us very brief footage of Master Chief’s next adventure, but boy was it pretty. So pretty, in fact, that it’s probably going to be on an Xbox we don’t have in our hands yet.
Seriously, it was impressive stuff, but what is it, exactly? What is Halo: Infinite? Is this Halo 6, or something else? Phil and company are playing coy, so let the speculation begin…
…just like the speculation of what a Funko POP Gears of War game is? Yeah, that happened. Gears of War: The RTS is coming. Oh, and Gears of War 5? Sure, we can have that too. Microsoft dropped us more Gears than we can honestly handle, but it’s fun to see them trying new things with this franchise.
The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghosts of Tsushima
We knew we were going to see these games. Sony told us! But what they didn’t tell us was that we’d see a masterpiece continue to push boundaries for our medium in just the E3 demo alone. They didn’t tell us that we’d see Suckerpunch blow us away by proving they are capable of much, much more than just superhero games where you sprint up buildings.
Not only were these games gorgeous, they were intense. I can’t wait to play as Ellie as she hardens her heart once again to face that cruel world, nor can I wait to engage in brutal sword combat in one of the most picturesque and uniquely beautiful Japanese settings we’ve seen in a game yet.
Don’t have a PS4? What are you doing with your life?
Fallout 76 + The Elder Scrolls 6 + Starfield
A long-awaited series making its return, with the biggest tease ever (seriously, that camera panned for about 10 seconds, if that) but for some reason, it looks like the vastest Elder Scrolls world we’ve seen yet.
Bethesda Game Studios is going Sci-Fi. Most likely on that unnamed console we’ve yet to see from Microsoft, just like Halo: Infinite. But I digress.
Bethesda managed to give us exactly what we expected yet also gave us something we didn’t expect at all, in the same breath. That’s how you do E3.
If you didn’t already pre-order that Power Armor edition like yours truly…well, good luck. You’re gonna need it, friend!
Anthem and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
We were all chomping at the bit to see what the house that built Mass Effect was going to unleash next. Apparently, it’s going to be like playing as Iron Man, with your friends, inside an engrossing world full of exploration and narrative intrigue, with some sort of non-predatory loot gameplay loop to keep you hooked and coming back for more. And it’s coming out in the month where everyone’s landlord is going to be pissed because everyone will be late paying their rent, because video games: February 2019!
The one-two punch was sealed thanks to Ubisoft, when they revealed for the first time in Assassin’s Creed history that you’ll be able to choose between playing as a male or female character. Speaking of choice, why not add dialogue options? How about romance? RPG elements where your decisions and behavior shape the world around you, and provide a ripple effect? Are we talking about Mass Effect suddenly? No, we’re talking about Assassin’s Creed, and that’s why it’s on the list.
Both EA and Ubisoft are taking their talents in very new, unknown directions they haven’t dabbled in before, and this is why we’re excited.
Super Smash Brothers Ultimate and Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch
2 million players downloaded Fortnite on the Switch within 24 hours of release. If that doesn’t explain why this is a big deal…well, maybe you should download our podcast, so we can teach you a few things. More on that in a second.
Super Smash Brothers is a household name, but when you announce a Smash Brothers title that you can take anywhere on the go, that has EVERY CHARACTER that’s ever been in the franchise…that’s on another level. Which there will be plenty of, by the way! Levels/stages, techniques, animations, moves, custom displays, outfits…you name it! It’s all in this game, apparently, and we all thought we might just be getting a minor update to the previous Wii U game ported over. Nintendo said “C’mon. You really think we were going to hit the brakes so soon?”
There were too many great games and moments to list, but this is the crème de la crème, according to the 410wned crew. To get more impressions, opinions, cold hard facts, and seriously entertaining banter, be sure to check out our weekly podcast here: (show page/link).
